Newsletter #2

6 January 2026

Thank you for your continued interest in the Halifax Regional Municipality’s Suburban Plan!

As part of the Suburban Planning process, our team will be hosting and attending events in communities across the Suburban Area to:

  1. Listen and learn from our suburban communities – What's important to residents? What challenges are they facing?
  2. Develop a vision for the future of our suburban communities – How should our main roads, residential neighbourhoods and open spaces function? What should they look like?
  3. Learn from residents and key partners – What can local groups, organizations and interested parties share about their communities?
  4. Share key Suburban Plan concepts – How can planning tools, like designations and zones, shape change in our communities? How do we create complete suburban communities?

Getting Started...

The Suburban Plan team is hosting a series of introductory engagement events across several communities in the suburban area. These engagement sessions will be opportunities for residents to learn more about the suburban planning process and provide key insights and perspectives.

What types of engagement opportunities will there be?

Kickoff Open Houses

A series of Kickoff Open House events are scheduled for communities across the Suburban Area. Residents may drop in to the open houses at any time during the scheduled hours. Please note that staff will be providing a short presentation at 2:30pm during the afternoon sessions and 6:00pm during the evening sessions. The open houses will include information panels and opportunities to provide comments and ideas. The team will be available to provide further information and to answer questions. Attendees can provide feedback by chatting with staff, providing written comments at stations throughout the event, and by following up online. Come visit a kickoff open house in your community!

Pop-ups

In addition to formal events, the Suburban Plan team will be “popping up” with a mobile display at existing community spaces or events. Pop-ups are informal opportunities for our team to hear from residents in spaces and places that are most convenient for them. Please feel free to reach out if there is an event or location you would like to see us at! We may “pop up” on short notice but will be sharing updates on where to find us on HRM’s social media channels and our project website!

How can I stay involved?

Please visit the project page for more information and updates. In case you missed it, read our kickoff newsletter for more information on the Suburban Planning process. Take the survey or contribute to the interactive map to share with us ideas for your community!

We encourage everyone to continue following the Suburban Plan process and share your comments with us!
